This is the song that I will go to when the world is seriously crappy (like after reading articles like this one that babyulu posted)... and I've actually had it for a while, but it's taken a new found (dare I say it) obsession to re-introduce it and make me realize what it really means to me...
So, I'm posting two versions, the original by Paul Brady and the new one by Keith Harkin of Celtic Thunder. And I'll have the lyrics below that. It's truly a beautiful song, written during The Troubles in Ireland, but it's really timeless.
The Island (Paul Brady)
They say the skies of Lebanon are burning
Those mighty cedars bleeding in the heat
They're showing pictures on the television
Women and children dying in the street
And we're still at it in our own place
Still trying to reach the future through the past
Still trying to carve tomorrow from a tombstone...
But Hey! Don't listen to me!
This wasn't meant to be no sad song
We've heard too much of that before
Right now I only want to be here with you
Till the morning dew comes falling
I want to take you to the island
And trace your footprints in the sand
And in the evening when the sun goes down
We'll make love to the sound of the ocean
They're raising banners over by the markets
Whitewashing slogans on the shipyard walls
Witchdoctors praying for a mighty showdown
No way our holy flag is gonna fall
Up here we sacrifice our children
To feed the worn-out dreams of yesterday
And teach them dying will lead us into glory...
But Hey! Don't listen to me!
This wasn't meant to be no sad song
We've heard too much of that before
Right now I only want to be here with you
Till the morning dew comes falling
I want to take you to the island
And trace your footprints in the sand
And in the evening when the sun goes down
We'll make love to the sound of the ocean
Now I know us plain folks don't see all the story
And I know this peace and love's just copping out
And I guess these young boys dying in the ditches
Is just what being free is all about
And how this twisted wreckage down on main street
Will bring us all together in the end
And we'll go marching down the road to freedom...
Freedom

That's a hearty "Happy St. Patrick's Day To You All"!
I found some awesome audio from the PBS broadcast and had to share it (since the cd doesn't come out until the day after St.Paddys)! These guys are truly awesome. If you weren't able to catch them last Friday, there is at least one more chance: Monday, 3/17 (yup, St. Paddys) on KOCE at 7pm. It is really an awesome show and worth dealing with the pledge breaks (especially since there are interviews in three of the four breaks).
Anyway, I have one group number and a song featuring each guy.
This one is called Ireland's Call and it's actually the official anthem of the Ireland Rugby Team (now you know why I had to share it ::wink::)
The other songs I've picked are:
Heartbreaker - Ryan Kelly
Steal Away - Paul Byrom
The Island - Keith Harkin
The Voyage - George Donaldson
Puppy Love - Damian McGinty
ENJOY!!!!
